ITINERARY

Day 1 – Sat: London at Leisure & Welcome Dinner
Welcome to Heathrow Airport, London! After immigration and baggage claim, take a pre-booked independent transfer to your hotel, located in Kensington. A transfer from Gatwick Airport can be arranged at a cost of $75 per person. For the balance of the day you are free to rest or explore London a little. The Victoria & Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum, Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park are all within easy reach. In the evening meet your guide and fellow travelers over a welcome drink to discuss your vacation before dining in the hotel. (D)

Day 2 – Sun: Tower of London & City Sights
This morning take a guided tour around central London to see famous landmarks including Piccadilly Circus, Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Visit the Tower of London to view the magnificent Crown Jewels, guarded by Beefeaters in distinctive Tudor uniforms. See the White Tower, completed in 1097, and many other fortresses. Spend the afternoon and evening on your own to sightsee, shop, dine or go to a West End show – there’s no shortage of activities near your hotel. (B)

Day 3 – Mon: Jane Austen’s Bath & Cardiff Castle Banquet
Drive west to the town of Bath, popular for its natural hot springs with the Romans 2,000 years ago and again in the Regency period. Bath was home to Jane Austen from 1801 to 1806 when the city was a popular spa resort and provided the setting for two of her novels, “Northanger Abbey” and “Persuasion.” Take a walking tour to view Queen’s Square, Pulteney Bridge and Bath Abbey. Visit the Roman Baths and Pump Room to see many sections still preserved after two millennia. View the elegant Royal Crescent and other fine houses before traveling into Wales to view the regenerated Cardiff Bay and Wales’ proud capital. Head to Cardiff Castle, developed in Roman times and transformed into an elaborate Gothic-style castle in the 19th century. A tour of the castle is followed by a fun Welsh medieval in the undercroft. (B, D)

Day 4 – Tue: Brecon Beacons & Portmeirion Village
Drive past the coal producing region of South Wales and through the lovely expanses of Brecon Beacons National Park, a region of gentle hills. Stop in the market town of Brecon for a look around and then drive north through peaceful sheep pastures of Mid Wales. In the afternoon visit the Italianate village of Portmeirion. This charming resort with winding streets, towers and woodland gardens was built in the 20th century to show how a naturally beautiful place could be developed without spoiling it. A short drive will take you to Caernarfon, best known for its great stone castle, built in 1283 by Edward I, where Charles, the Prince of Wales, was invested in 1969. The town grew up around the Castle and a brief orientation walk will show you the market square, quaint buildings and narrow lanes. (B, D)

Day 5 – Wed: North Wales & Snowdonia
Today tour scenic North Wales starting at Llandudno’s seafront lined with elegant Victorian buildings. Stop in nearby Conwy, a charming town with medieval buildings, the smallest house in Britain and a huge castle similar to that in Caernarfon. Stop in Betws-y-Coed, a charming Welsh village, for a look around and view Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales. Visit the National Slate Museum which relates the hardships of this region’s slate industry, developed in Victorian times. Back in Caernarfon, tour Caernarfon Castle, once a vast military stronghold and royal palace. Explore walkways around the massive walls and battlements that dominate the town. After dinner you may like to check out the Anglesey Arms Pub, set between the castle and the bay. (B, D)

Day 6 – Thu: Llangollen & Stratford-upon-Avon
Drive through the gentle scenery of North Wales and take a break in the charming village of Llangollen before heading across the English border into Shropshire. Explore the picturesque town of Bridgnorth, divided by Britain’s longest river, the Severn. Stop in the High Town for a stroll around to see fine gabled and half-timbered houses, one of which dates back to 1580. Drive to Stratford-upon-Avon for a panoramic tour around the lovely old town with its many black-and-white houses and shops. Visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace to see an exhibition about his life and work before entering the house where he was born where all rooms are furnished in the style of his times. Check in to your Tudor-style hotel in the center of the town and enjoy free time before dinner. (B, D)

Day 7 – Fri: Cotswolds & Windsor Castle
Drive through part of the Cotswolds and stop in the village of Broadway to look at quaint old houses built of honey-colored stone that line the main street. Drive south to Oxford and take a walking tour through the historic city center to learn about the history, architecture, traditions and alumni of the most famous colleges, including Christ Church College, founded in 1524 and featured in many movies. After some free time head to Windsor for a tour of Windsor Castle, one of The Queen’s official residences and the largest occupied castle in the world. See the lavishly decorated State Apartments and St. George’s Chapel. Check in to your hotel, close to the Castle, for a farewell dinner with your fellow travelers. (B, D)

Day 8 – Sat: Depart for Home
As today is departure day, travel by group coach transfer to arrive at Heathrow Airport at either 7:00 am or 10:00 am to allow plenty of time for check in formalities. Transfers to Gatwick Airport can be arranged at additional cost. (B)
