Day 1: Mexico City
Arrival, reception and transfer to your hotel.

Day 2: Mexico City
After breakfast, a guided city tour through Mexico City, starting from The Zocalo, the historical centre of Mexico City. The tour includes the National Palace, famous for its colourful murals by Diego Rivera; the Cathedral Metropolitana, perhaps the most impressive in all of Mexico which was built by the Spanish in the 1520s. Return to your hotel.

Day 3: Mexico City – Teotihuacan
Breakfast, followed by guided tours of Teotihuacan, with its impressive Pyramids of the Sun, Moon and Quetzacoatl. Continue on towards the Basilica de Guadalupe. The city tour includes visits to the National Palace, Historical city centre and Chapultepec Park. Return to your hotel.

Day 4: Mexico City – Cuernavaca – Taxco
After breakfast, journey on to Cuernavaca, the “City of the Ethernal Spring ” for a glimpse of the colonial city centre with its sober cathedral and fortress like Palacio de Cortes. Continuation through the fertile Morelos valley in to the Sierra Madre Occidental where, hidden away, is Taxco, the famous silver city and pearl of Colonial Mexican Art. Return to Mexico City.

Day 5: Mexico City – Oaxaca
Transfer to the airport for the flight to Oaxaca. Arrival and transfer to your hotel. Free day at leisure.

Day 6: Oaxaca
After breakfast, tour of this Spanish-built city, complete with its narrow streets, it has a special atmosphere with its large indigenous population, flourishing markets and some superb colonial architecture. A visit to the Iglesia de Santo Domingo, the most splendid of Oaxaca’s many churches and also to the 2500-year-old Zapotec ruins of nearby Monte Alban. Return to your hotel.

Day 7: Oaxaca – Tuxtle – San Cristóbal de las Casas
After breakfast, flight to Tuxtla and transfer to your hotel. A tour of this handsome colonial town in the pine-clad Valle de Jovel, surrounded by the classic Mayan villages of the Chiapas highlands. Free afternoon.

Day 8: San Cristóbal de las Casas – Palenque
After breakfast, journey by road to the ancient ruins Palenque, situated near a town of the same name. This is Mexico’s most breath-taking archaeological park. During the Mayan period, it was believed to be one of the most important cities of its day. Surrounded by lush tropical forest and jungle, this site has a serene, mystical atmosphere. Palenque contained tombs of ancient leaders and rulers, and still today, excavations are ongoing to uncover more of the mysteries and enigmas surrounding the ancient civilizations of the Maya.

Day 9: Palenque – Merida – Uxmal
Opportunity to return to the site for more personal appreciation before the main tourist groups arrive. After, transfer to the airport for the flight to Merida and transfer to your hotel. Conveniently located, it is only minutes from Mérida; one of Mexico’s most nostalgic colonial cities, similar to the city of Oaxaca. Merida combines colonial-era architecture with a rich Indian heritage. After lunch, a visit to nearby Kabah and the pyramids of Uxmal, site of perhaps the finest of all Mayan cities, where you will also enjoy a sound & light show (8:30 pm).

Day 10: Merida – Chichen Itza
After breakfast, tour of Merida before heading toward Yaxcaba and your lodge for the night, Mayaland Hotel. This was the first Hotel built at Chichen Itza (in 1923), and with its superb location amidst the temples, the first within an ancient site in the world. Lunch before a guided tour of this ancient Mayan city, dating back to 514 AD.

Day 11: Merida – Chichen Itza
A final day to visit this incredible site before the main throng of tourists arrive. Exclusive to your lodge, you enter Chichen Itza this morning through a private entrance, with the El Castillo pyramid in its majesty just around the bend. After your guided tour of the site’s temples, platforms and ball courts, there is time for more personal reflection or as an alterntive, a visit to lesser-known Ek-Balam, once a pivotal site in the public affairs of eastern Yucatan and a former burial site of Mayan royalty.

Day 12: Chichen Itza — Cancun – Juarez
After breakfast, transfer to Cancun for your flight to Juarez, close the US border. Transfer to your hotel.

Day 13: Juarez
After breakfast, transport to the train terminal to board the train and start the journey which will eventually takes us along the Copper Canyon rail journey. The trip heads south begins through the desert with its unique flora and fauna, including barrel cacti, road runners and Gila lizards.

Day 14: Chihuahua
Upon arriving to Chihuahua, a guided city tour allows for a visit to the Museum of the Revolution, once the home of Pancho Villa; the towering Chihuahua Cathedral, with its marvelous baroque facade, and the Government Palace. We shall also visit the Quinta Gameros Museum. As we reboard the train, we continue to pass south through montane forest, ranchlands and fertile orchards.

Day 15: Creel
After traveling all night in our deluxe carriage, we awake this morning in Creel, where we transfer to Cusarare Falls. In 1741, Jesuits built the Cusarare Mission nearby and acquired 12 Miguel Correa oil painitngd, depicting the life of the Virgin Mary. These restored paintings and others are housed today in the Loyola Museum. We visit the adobe mission, and tour the museum enjoying the gallery. In the evening we get our first glimpse of the Copper Canyon by dining at the Hotel Posada Barrancas Mirador, positioned on the canyons edge, before boarding the train for our overnight journey.

Day 16: Copper Canyon
Today the train travels the world’s most scenic rail route, the famous Copper Canyon, which the locals call Barranca del Cobre. A vast network of canyons and six rivers, this region is accessible only by rail. and is four times the size of the Grand Canyon. We spend the entire day on board the train, winding through 83 tunnels, crossing 35 trestles and climbing 8,000 feet into the heart of the Sierra Madres, an unforgettable experience.

Day 17: Alamos
We will arrive today at the final stop of this epic journey to Alamos, a tranquil little town in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Declared a national historical monument, this town back in the 18th century, was a silver boom town of fabulous mansions and haciendas, but by the 1920s it had declined into a forgotten backwater. Alamos’ Spanish colonial buildings have been beautifully restored and much of the architecture has a Moorish influence, thanks to the Andalusian artisans who originally built the city in 1540. We alight and spend an evening at the luxurious 17th Century Hacienda de los Santos.

Day 18: Alamos
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your return flight home.
