SWEDEN’S BACKROADS TOUR

Day 1 – Thursday, August 4
Departure from USA (D on board)
Today, depart from O’Hare International Airport to Stockholm, Sweden. Or request international departure from the city of your choice, dependent upon availability.

Day 2 – Friday, August 5
Arrival in Stockholm (B on board, D)
Arrive in Stockholm. A get-acquainted tour of Stockholm includes: City Hall, the Wasa Ship Museum, which houses the restored Wasa ship that sank on its maiden voyage in the 17th Century, Embassy Row, the magnificent view of the city from Fjellgatan Street and Gamla Stan (Old Town). The afternoon is free to explore this wonderful city. Of interest on your own: Gamla Stan (Old Town), the royal palace, many museums and shopping. Dinner and overnight in Stockholm.

Day 3 – Saturday, August 6
Stockholm – Archipelago – Blidö – Yxlan – Furusund – Norrtälje (B, D)
This morning a cruise of the beautiful Stockholm Archipelago takes you to the island of Blidö. Enjoy free time to shop and explore then board the ferry and do a bit of island hopping, visiting Yxlan and Furusund. Rejoin your bus and travel the winding road to Norrtälje for dinner and overnight.

Day 4 – Sunday, August 7
Norrtälje – Åland – Norrtälje (B, D)
Today travel to Kapellskär to join the Viking Line cruise to Mariehamn on the Finnish island of Åland. Take a tour of this island city and surrounding countryside before returning to Norrtälje. Enjoy a delicious smorgasbord dinner on board the boat before arriving back at Kapellskär. Overnight in Norrtälje.

Day 5 – Monday, August 8
Norrtälje – Uppsala – Sala – Avesta – Tällberg (B, D)
Drive to the university town of Uppsala to tour the magnificent Uppsala Cathedral and visit Gamla Uppsala, the site of ancient Viking Age burial mounds. In the small town of Sala visit the Sala Silver Mine, founded in 1512. At Avesta make a photo stop to see the world’s largest Dala horse standing 43 three feet tall. Continue to Tällberg for dinner and overnight.

Day 6 – Tuesday, August 9
Tällberg – Nusnäs – Rättvik – Sundborn – Leksand – Tällberg  (B, D)
This morning drive to Nusnäs to watch expert craftsmen at work carving Sweden’s famous Dala horses at Nils Olssons Hemslöjd. Near the town of Rättvik visit the beautiful 12th century church surrounded by hundreds of tiny “houses” once used to stable horses during the long church services. Continue to Sundborn to tour the home and studio of world-renowned artist Carl Larsson. This evening enjoy a dinner cruise on beautiful Lake Siljan aboard the M/S Gustaf Vasa. Overnight in Tällberg.

Day 7 – Wednesday, August 10
Tällberg – Ludvika – Filipstad – Karlstad (B, D)
Depart Tällberg heading south out of Dalarna. Continue to Ludvika; once an important mining town (first ironworks 1555) but now dominated by the electrical industry (transformer testing plant of the ASEA Brown Boveri corporation). Make a stop for a coffee break at the “Konditori” in Ludvika before continuing to Filipstad to visit the John Ericsson burial site. Continue to Karlstad, for dinner and overnight.

Day 8 – Thursday, August 11
Karlstad- Håverud- Vänersborg- Karlsborg (B,D)
Today enjoy a visit to the Dalsland Center in Håverud, the hub of the Dalsland Canal system, built in the 1800’s to connect Dalsland and western Värmland. Its pride and joy is the remarkable aqueduct, canal builder Nils Ericson’s extraordinary invention to create a passage past the Håverud rapids. Free time in Vänersborg before continuing to Karlsborg for dinner and overnight.

Day 9 – Friday, August 12
Karlsborg – Tiveden – Motala – Linköping (B, D)
This morning drive through the awesome old-growth Tiveden National Forest before swinging down the other side of Lake Vättern to Motala. Take a look at another section of the Göta Canal before traveling to Linköping to visit Gamla Linköping, the Old Town of Linköping. Dinner and overnight in Linköping.

Day 10, Saturday, August 13
Linköping – Bergs Slussar – Kalmar (B, L, D)
Take another look at the Göta Canal at Bergs Slussar before continuing to Västervik on Sweden’s east coast. This afternoon enjoy a delightful cruise on the archipelago before continuing to Kalmar for dinner and overnight.

Day 11, Sunday, August 14
Eksjö – Öland- Kalmar (B, D)
Enjoy a full day of exploration and touring on the island of Öland on the Baltic Sea. Öland is the smallest of Sweden’s traditional provinces and the country’s second largest island. Enjoy a tour of the ruins of Borgholm castle situated near Solliden, the summer residence of the royal family. Visit Eketorp, one of nineteen Iron Age Ringforts identified on the island and the only one to be completely excavated, yielding over 24,000 artifacts. In late afternoon, return to Kalmar for dinner and overnight.

Day 12 – Monday, August 15
Kalmar- “Crystal Kingdom”- Karlshamn- Kristianstad  (B,D)
Tour centuries old Kalmar Castle before continuing to the Crystal Kingdom and the crystal factories of Orrefors and Kosta Boda. At Karlshamn in the province of Blekinge stop at the “Emigrant Statue” dedicated to Karl-Oskar and Kristina, from the Vilhelm Moberg “Emigrants” books. Drive to Kristianstad for dinner and overnight.

Day 13 – Tuesday, August 16
Kristianstad – Lund – Copenhagen (B)
Continue in the province of Skåne to the university town of Lund for a brief stop at Lund Cathedral, which houses the amazing 12th century astronomical clock. Drive through the city of Malmö and over the Öresund Bridge to Copenhagen for your flight home to Chicago this afternoon.
